21st Century Learning

Date: December 12-14, 2013
Location:  Hong Kong
This annual conference is one of the best professional development opportunities I can imagine.  For two days people from around the world get together to share not only their thoughts on technology in the classroom but their practices as well.  It was wonderful opportunity to see how people integrate gaming, make images more interactive, and catch up with friends from last year.  This particular conference was a personal highlight as I was a presenter.

As part of the 21st Century Learning Conference participants are invited to attend one day pre-conferences.  This year I was able to attend the Invent to Learn Maker Workshop led by Gary Stager.  This fascinating workshop was allowed participants hands on experience on what making can look like and how teachers can get started very quickly.

During this fantastic four days of learning I was able to attend sessions on e-portfolio's, Google Apps and the iPad, using YouTube videos in the classroom.  The keynotes for the conference were all fantastic and provided those present with ideas for us to use in the class.  As a result of the Bootcamp I was able to complete my tests for the Google Qualified Individual exams and I am now preparing to submit and application to become a trainer.

During this fascinating one day conference, Dr. Mishra took people on a journey of self discover through the TPAK model of technology integration.  Throughout the day we expanded on our own understanding of this method, provided with resources from Dr. Mishra and from fellow participants.  One of the most enjoyable aspects to this workshop was meeting with other technology coaches/facilitators and to learn what has been working for them.

During this fascinating 3 day conference participants had the opportunity to attend keynotes presented by Dr. Jenny Lane, Dr. Larry Rosen, Dr. Nichole Pinkard, and Dan Meyer.  The conference also provided the opportunity to attend a variety of many smaller sessions.  The sessions I attended included "Leadership in a 21 Century School-Mobile Devices are changing our lives but how can they best be used?," "What's wrong with ICT Curriculum? Working Approaches to Skills Based Assessment of Learning," "The Mini Flipped Classroom for Numeracy in Primary School," "Forum 6: How can we best leverage student passion and interest in technology and media for learning whilst keeping a focus on key content and big ideas," "Easy Technology for the 21st Century Educator," and "Integrating Minecraft into a PYP Unit of Inquiry."

During this fascinating seminar Mr. Novemeber provided teachers with practical strategies to help make the best use of technology within the classroom.  After the seminar I have implemented several of the tools and resources that he recommends within my classroom.
